The FBI has released video footage showing Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect in the deadly New Year's Day attack in New Orleans, recorded with Meta glasses during visits to the French Quarter months before the incident.
The FBI released video footage on Sunday showing Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran accused of carrying out the deadly New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans. The footage, recorded with Meta glasses, shows Jabbar traveling through the French Quarter during visits to the city in October and November, months before the attack.
Jabbar, who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State extremist group, rented a home in the French Quarter during those visits, where he recorded videos while navigating the area, which later became the site of the horrific attack.
The FBI has confirmed that Jabbar acted alone in the assault, which involved a truck being driven into a crowd of revelers on Bourbon Street, killing 14 people and injuring dozens more. Authorities have labeled the attack an act of terrorism.
Jabbar was killed in a shootout with police following the attack. The New Orleans coroner's office has confirmed the identities of all 14 victims, the youngest of whom was 18 and the oldest 63, with most of the victims being in their 20s.
The FBI is also investigating Jabbar’s past travels to Egypt and Canada as part of their ongoing probe.
