Ukraine’s navy says Russia deliberately attacked a Turkish civilian vessel carrying sunflower oil to Egypt with a drone in the Black Sea, escalating pressure on maritime shipping linked to Ukrainian exports.
In a statement posted on Telegram on Saturday, Ukraine’s navy said the vessel, identified as the Viva, was sailing in Ukraine’s exclusive economic zone when it was struck. The ship had 11 Turkish citizens on board. No injuries were reported and the vessel continued its journey to Egypt, according to the navy, which said it remains in contact with the ship’s captain.
Ukraine accused Russia of violating maritime law, saying the strike took place in open sea areas beyond the reach of Ukrainian air defence systems. Moscow has not commented on the allegation.
The incident followed Russian attacks on two Ukrainian ports on Friday. Ukraine’s navy said those strikes damaged three Turkish-owned vessels, triggering a large fire on one of the ships.
The attacks come amid rising tensions in the Black Sea. Moscow has warned it could “cut Ukraine off from the sea” after Ukrainian strikes reportedly damaged three so-called shadow fleet tankers carrying Russian oil exports.
