The absence of a local fire brigade delayed firefighters’ arrival from the city of Juliaca, Mayor Valerio Tapi Tapia said.
Officials reported that the venue lacked basic safety measures, including functioning fire extinguishers and clearly marked emergency exits. The tragedy has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in entertainment venues across the Puno region.
Police and forensic teams removed the bodies from the charred building as the investigation continues.
