A gas explosion at a karaoke restaurant in the Andean town of Huancane left 10 people dead, including eight students, and seriously injured three others, local authorities said Friday, December 5.
The blaze erupted Thursday afternoon, December 4, after a gas cylinder exploded, rapidly consuming the building. Neighbors and passersby attempted to control the flames using buckets of water and fire extinguishers as thick smoke threatened nearby homes. The absence of a local fire brigade delayed firefighters’ arrival from the city of Juliaca, Mayor Valerio Tapi Tapia said.
Officials reported that the venue lacked basic safety measures, including functioning fire extinguishers and clearly marked emergency exits. The tragedy has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in entertainment venues across the Puno region.
Police and forensic teams removed the bodies from the charred building as the investigation continues.
Authorities have not yet provided details on the cause beyond the initial gas explosion, and investigations are ongoing.
