Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has warned that the Baltic Sea is increasingly turning into an arena of confrontation with Russia, urging European allies to strengthen their defense readiness.
Speaking at the Berlin Security Conference, Pistorius said Moscow is testing NATO’s deterrence through hybrid attacks, including cyberattacks, espionage, sabotage, and disinformation campaigns.
“The Baltic Sea, long seen as a bridge between European countries, is now a testing ground for our deterrence and response capabilities,” Pistorius said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions.
The minister cited incidents such as damaged undersea cables, airspace violations, and unidentified drones over ports and supply networks as deliberate attempts to destabilize European nations.
“These are not coincidences. This is strategy and warning signs. Russia is rearming,” he said, stressing that European allies must maintain unity and bolster defense to counter hybrid threats effectively.
