Germany extends border controls beyond March 2025, citing rising irregular migration, smuggling, and security threats.
Germany plans to extend border controls beyond March 2025 to combat illegal migration and smuggling, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced, citing the need for stronger EU border protection.
Temporary border checks, initially expanded in September to all borders for six months due to migration and security threats, have been ongoing with Austria since 2015 and with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland since October 2023.
Controls with France are linked to the Paris Olympics. The Schengen area permits such measures only during exceptional circumstances. Pressure on Germany intensified after a 2023 stabbing attack in Solingen by a rejected Syrian asylum seeker, linked to Daesh/ISIS, which killed three people.
Germany recorded over 266,000 cases of illegal entry last year, mostly from Syria and Afghanistan.
