Russia launched a wave of drone and missile strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight, prompting nationwide electricity restrictions and killing one person in the city of Zaporizhzhia, officials said on Thursday.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko accused Moscow of deliberately targeting Ukraine’s population and power facilities as winter draws near.

“Its aim is to plunge Ukraine into darkness. Ours is to keep the lights on,” Svyrydenko wrote on Telegram. “To stop this terror, we need more air defence systems, tougher sanctions, and maximum pressure on the aggressor.”

Moscow denies striking civilian targets, claiming its attacks are retaliatory measures against Ukrainian operations on Russian infrastructure. Kyiv has carried out repeated drone strikes on military and oil sites since Russia’s full-scale invasion began nearly four years ago.

‘There have been strikes’

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had launched more than 650 drones and 50 missiles overnight. “Many were shot down, but unfortunately, there have been hits,” he wrote on X.

Energy facilities in central, western, and southeastern regions were affected, according to Ukrainian officials.

The energy ministry imposed nationwide limits on electricity supplies for both retail and industrial users, while some areas also experienced disruptions to water and heating services.

Regional authorities reported damage to two energy sites in the western Lviv region. DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy firm, said its thermal power plants in several regions had come under attack.

One person was killed and 17 others injured, including six children, in strikes on the southeastern industrial hub of Zaporizhzhia, regional governor Ivan Fedorov said.

The attacks damaged five apartment buildings and other infrastructure. “People have suffered acute stress reactions, wounds, concussions, bruises, and fractures,” Fedorov added.

State railway company Ukrzaliznytsia said power outages in the southern Mykolaiv region had caused train delays.
