U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday awarded conservative commentator Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, honouring him posthumously a month after his assassination in Utah.

Speaking at the White House, Trump described Kirk as “a fearless warrior for liberty” and “a beloved leader who galvanised the next generation like nobody I’ve ever seen before.”

Kirk was shot dead on 10 September while addressing students at Utah Valley University. A 22-year-old suspect, Tyler Robinson, remains in custody.

The president called the Medal of Freedom “a big deal,” adding that “very few people, frankly, qualify.” Kirk’s wife, Erika, accepted the award on his behalf, thanking Trump “for honouring my husband in such a profound and meaningful way.”

Congress has designated 14 October, Kirk’s birthday, as a National Day of Remembrance in his memory.
