Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump are expected to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit next month in South Korea.

The two-day summit will take place on 31 October and 1 November in the southeastern city of Gyeongju.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, ahead of his first visit to Beijing, said he would discuss Xi’s trip with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. Cho highlighted the summit’s importance for enhancing cooperation and reducing regional tensions.

The acting U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, Joseph Yun, and National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said they expect Trump to attend, though nothing has been officially confirmed. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung personally invited Trump to the summit.

The summit comes against the backdrop of ongoing trade negotiations between Seoul and Washington. Under the proposed agreement, South Korea would invest around $350 billion in the U.S., in return for a reduction in reciprocal tariffs from 25% to 15%.

China and South Korea established diplomatic relations in 1992, with trade between the two countries reaching $267.6 billion in 2024.
