Floods in Pakistan’s Punjab province have claimed at least 101 lives and affected 4.6 million people, according to officials.

Nearly 5,000 villages have been submerged as authorities struggle to cope with the mounting death toll and widespread devastation.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) described the disaster as the worst in Punjab’s history. Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed reported that more than 4,700 villages have been inundated, directly impacting 4.57 million people. He added that 2.51 million people and over 2.01 million livestock have been relocated to safer areas.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said rescue and relief operations are ongoing, but the sheer scale of the disaster has overstretched available resources.

According to the United Nations, since 26 June heavy monsoon rains and flash floods across the country have killed 932 people, injured 1,060, and damaged or destroyed more than 8,238 houses.
