The United States has suspended approvals of almost all visitor visas for individuals holding Palestinian passports, The New York Times reports.

The restrictions affect travel for medical treatment, university studies, business, and visiting relatives.

The State Department cited national security concerns and instructed consular officers to use section 221(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 to temporarily deny visa applications for Palestinian passport holders. Dual nationals or those who have already obtained visas are not affected.

The move follows announcements by some Western countries considering recognition of a Palestinian state. U.S. officials have emphasized compliance with national security and law as the rationale for the policy. Palestinian officials, including President Mahmoud Abbas, have criticized the decision, calling for reconsideration.
