Firefighters have successfully contained a wildfire that began on 18 August and swept through Algeria’s Chrea mountains, prompting authorities to evacuate residents from their homes to ensure their safety.

"We carried out a precautionary evacuation of 20 families living in the vicinity, as a precaution to prevent suffocation or injuries among citizens. Even among the Civil Defence, there were no major injuries," said Nassim Bernaoui, Deputy Director of Statistics and Information at Algerian Civil Protection.

Algeria faces seasonal wildfires each summer, often worsened by extreme heat and drought.

Authorities have urged vigilance as high temperatures and dry winds continue across the region.

The recent blaze affected multiple provinces but has now been brought under control thanks to rapid response efforts by firefighters, according to authorities.
