U.S. President Donald Trump said on 26 August that U.S. colleges would face serious challenges without Chinese students.
Speaking at a White House cabinet meeting, Trump highlighted that relations with China are positive and that he maintains a good rapport with President Xi. He emphasised that allowing Chinese students to study in the U.S. is crucial, just as it is for students from other countries, to ensure the stability of the higher education system. “Otherwise, the college system would collapse, and lower-tier institutions would face significant difficulties,” Trump added.
He also told President Xi that the U.S. is honoured to host Chinese students, noting that their presence demonstrates the strength of the American higher education system. Trump described Chinese students in the U.S. as “an industry involving millions of people” and said that relations with China are now markedly different from previous years.
The comments follow some backlash among Trump’s base after he suggested permitting up to 600,000 Chinese students to enter the country as part of broader trade discussions.
