A massive explosion at a fireworks warehouse in Karachi on Thursday injured at least 34 people, sparking fires and panic among residents in Pakistan’s largest city.

The blast caused fires in the warehouse and nearby shops, followed by smaller explosions that forced residents to flee. Smoke billowed from a multi-story building as firefighters worked to control the blaze.

The explosion was powerful enough to shatter glass in surrounding shops, sending shards into the streets.

"I thought several bombs have exploded," resident Aqib Khan told reporters.

The explosion came a day after intense monsoon rains flooded the city.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident in Pakistan’s financial capital, home to more than 20 million people.
