A Cessna aircraft operated by AMREF Flying Doctors crashed into a residential area of Nairobi on Thursday, killing six people, according to local authorities.

The crash occurred shortly after the plane departed from Wilson Airport at 02:14 PM local time (1114 GMT), bound for Hargeisa in Somaliland. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) confirmed it lost contact with the aircraft just three minutes after take-off.

The Kiambu County Commissioner, Henry Wafula, said all four occupants on board, as well as two people on the ground, were killed in the crash. The victims on the plane were reportedly medical staff on an air ambulance mission.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident involving an air ambulance mission,” the KCAA said in a statement.

A witness who spoke to Reuters described hearing a loud sound before seeing a fireball erupt and debris scattered across the neighbourhood. “It was terrifying. Flames engulfed the area immediately,” she said.

Footage circulating on social media showed firefighters battling flames amid burning wreckage inside a residential compound.

AMREF Flying Doctors, a well-known medical evacuation charity in Africa, confirmed the aircraft was headed to Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland.
