South Korea removes loudspeakers as North stays silent

South Korea announced on Tuesday that North Korea has shown no signs of dismantling its own border loudspeakers, even after Seoul began removing its devices as a goodwill gesture to reduce tensions.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Col. Lee Sung-jun, spokesperson for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated during a regular briefing that only routine activity had been observed along the border, with no moves by North Korean forces to take down their loudspeakers.

Seoul began dismantling its loudspeakers on Monday, following an order by President Lee Jae Myung issued nearly two months ago to suspend frontline broadcasts as part of efforts to ease strained inter-Korean relations.

South Korea had resumed loudspeaker broadcasts in June last year for the first time in six years, in retaliation to North Korea's repeated release of trash-filled balloons across the demilitarized zone.
