Jordan’s armed forces said they killed two armed people during a foiled infiltration attempt from Syria on Friday, pushing the rest of the group back across the border.

The Jordanian Armed Forces gave no further details about the incident in a statement issued on Saturday. It said that other members of the group retreated into Syrian territory.

Jordan frequently reports thwarting infiltration attempts along its northern border, often linked to arms and drug smuggling.

In January, Jordan and Syria set up a joint security committee to secure the frontier, crack down on smuggling networks and prevent the resurgence of Islamic State militants in border areas.

Officials in Amman have warned that instability in southern Syria, combined with the presence of armed groups and traffickers, continues to pose security challenges for the kingdom.
