China announced it is normalizing relations with the European Parliament, lifting previous restrictions on mutual exchanges as both sides aim to strengthen economic and political ties.

China’s foreign ministry confirmed that Beijing and the European Parliament are restoring normal communication channels after disruptions caused by disputes over alleged human rights abuses in Xinjiang.

"Under current circumstances, both sides believe it is very important for China and Europe to strengthen dialogue and cooperation," spokesperson Lin Jian said, and adding that all restrictions on mutual exchanges of lawmakers have been lifted.

China’s foreign ministry comments followed a report by the South China Morning Post that Beijing had lifted the 'restrictions' imposed in 2021 on former EU lawmaker Reinhard Buetikofer.

Wednesday’s statement was made ahead of a China-EU leaders’ summit scheduled for later this month, where EU officials Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa are expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang in Beijing.
