Amber heat health alert issued across southern UK amid risk of increased deaths

UK authorities have raised an amber heat health alert for much of southern England, warning that the ongoing heatwave could lead to a rise in deaths.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) upgraded the alert from yellow to amber for London, the East and West Midlands, East of England, South East, and South West regions. Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland—also expecting high temperatures—are outside UKHSA’s jurisdiction.

Temperatures could reach as high as 34°C (93.2°F) in parts of London on Friday.

The UKHSA cautioned that “significant impacts are likely” and warned of a probable increase in deaths, especially among those aged 65 and older or people with existing health conditions. Younger groups may also be affected.

Health and social care services are under pressure, with hospitals and care homes facing risks of indoor temperatures surpassing recommended limits. Staff shortages may affect essential services during the heatwave.

The amber alert will remain in effect until Monday morning.
