Europe’s new-generation weather satellite, Meteosat Third Generation-Sounder 1 (MTG-S1), successfully launched into space from the U.S. Cape Canaveral base.
Developed with contributions from 30 countries — including Türkiye, Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom — the satellite aims to enhance real-time weather forecasting, strengthen early warning systems, and improve climate crisis preparedness.
For the first time, it will monitor the full life cycle of convective storms from space using hyperspectral infrared sounding technology that can detect atmospheric instability even before clouds form.
MTG-S1 is the second satellite in the Meteosat Third Generation programme and will be operated by EUMETSAT, which already manages nine satellites.
The system will eventually consist of six satellites and operate for 20 years.
