The Turkish-built Oruc Reis seismic vessel has successfully concluded its first intercontinental mission in Somali waters, conducting a 3D seismic survey over 4,464 square kilometres.
The Oruc Reis Seismic Exploration Vessel, built by Turkish engineers, has successfully completed its first intercontinental mission in Somali waters. According to the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, during the 234-day operation, Oruc Reis conducted a 3D seismic survey across three blocks covering an area of 4,464 square kilometres.
Türkiye’s Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said the data collected will play a crucial role in evaluating Somalia’s maritime jurisdiction and guiding future energy exploration efforts.
The mission began after the Production Sharing Agreement was signed between Türkiye and Somalia in July 2024 for three offshore blocks, and then the vessel set sail for Somalia in October.
Bayraktar added that the seismic data obtained will not only support maritime boundary assessments but will also form the basis for future energy exploration.
After the analysis is completed, drilling operations will begin in the identified areas.
The vessel is expected to return to Türkiye from Mogadishu Port in June and be ready for its next mission in August.
