Qatar has discussed potential investment in Afghanistan’s oil and gas sectors and the construction of a crude oil refinery, during talks in Kabul as Gulf businesses show growing interest in the Afghan market.
Afghanistan’s Minister of Mines and Petroleum Hedayatullah Badri met Qatar’s Ambassador Mirdif bin Ali Al-Qashouti, with the Afghan side saying the talks also covered political and economic relations and investment in mineral resources.
The mines ministry said the ambassador raised investment opportunities in Afghanistan’s natural resources.
“The Ambassador of Qatar discussed his country’s political and economic relations with Afghanistan, as well as existing investment opportunities in Afghanistan’s mineral resources, particularly in the oil and gas sectors,” it said in a statement.
The ministry said the possibility of establishing a standard crude oil refinery was also raised during the meeting.
Badri welcomed Qatar’s interest and offered ministry support.
Afghanistan’s Petroleum Authority says seismic studies in the Amu Darya and Afghan-Tajik basins have identified geological structures with significant oil and gas potential.
The talks come days after Mohammed Nasser Mohammed Al-Sayer of Kuwait’s Al-Sayer Group visited Afghanistan and held meetings with Afghan officials.
Afghanistan’s Ministry of Information and Culture said Al-Sayer expressed interest in investing in tourism and exploring opportunities in the country. Other government accounts said discussions also covered trade and investment, including plans to export Afghan fresh and dried fruit to Kuwait and other markets.
Qatar has separately discussed investment and wider economic cooperation with Afghanistan this year, including during a June meeting between Ambassador Al-Qashouti and Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdul Ghani Baradar.
