Azerbaijan plans to save 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually by 2030, thanks to expanded renewable energy capacity, Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said at the Baku Energy Forum.
Azerbaijan’s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov announced that by integrating 2,700 megawatts of wind and solar energy into the national grid, the country expects to save 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually by 2030. Speaking at the Baku Energy Forum, Shahbazov stressed the need to enhance the capacity of regional transport infrastructures, including the Southern Gas Corridor, to support this transition. He noted that despite global efforts, hydrocarbons’ share in the energy mix has only changed by 5% over the last three decades — reinforcing that renewable energy sources are complementary, not substitutes.
Shahbazov warned that delaying investment in oil and gas would be a mistake, and emphasized the importance of diversification in energy sources, supply chains, and trade routes. He called this a prime moment for investors to act under clear and pragmatic energy policies. The minister also spotlighted five active projects aimed at securing future gas supplies and highlighted new agreements with major energy companies.
