Thousands of students from across Serbia convened in Novi Sad on Friday (October 31) ahead of the first anniversary of the railway station roof collapse that killed 16 people last November.

The disaster sparked a largely peaceful nationwide protest movement, led by university students and professors, which has challenged President Aleksandar Vučić’s 13-year rule.

Demonstrators, marching to Novi Sad from cities across Serbia, are calling for a snap election in an effort to unseat Vučić and his populist Serbian Progressive Party.

The main commemoration is set to begin at 11:52 a.m. on November 1 outside the railway station, with 16 minutes of silence to honour the victims, followed by speeches from students.
