Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said Georgia will not take part in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) unless the country's sovereignty is fully respected.
Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of Georgia’s Parliament, announced that the country will not send a delegation to PACE following a resolution that, according to him, undermines Georgia’s sovereignty.
Papuashvili strongly criticized the resolution, calling it a “Soviet-style” act that goes against the principles and values that PACE stands for.
“PACE has betrayed its own values. We’re seeing more and more Soviet-style behavior on international platforms, especially from representatives of post-Soviet countries who now speak under the European Union’s flag,” he said.
He added that the resolution disrespects the Georgian people's right to decide their future:
“That’s why our delegation walked out. Georgians have the right to choose their leaders. If that right isn’t respected, we won’t be part of PACE.”
