Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Committee has disclosed details of a criminal case involving former President Robert Kocharyan, saying he and five other people - including his son - have been detained as part of a corruption investigation.
According to a statement cited by Armenpress, investigators allege that while serving as president, Kocharyan acted in collusion with people close to him and used his official position to acquire valuable properties of social and economic significance.
The properties had allegedly been removed from state ownership on various fictitious grounds and subsequently sold at prices significantly below their market value.
Earlier on Tuesday, Armenian media reported that Kocharyan and his son Sedrak Kocharyan had been detained and taken to the Anti-Corruption Committee.
Sedrak Kocharyan was taken to the committee after officers from Armenia’s National Security Service arrived at the former president’s home.
Law enforcement agencies also continued searches at the property, where members of the Kocharyan family were reportedly present.
Bagrat Mikoyan, head of Robert Kocharyan’s office, said investigators had taken the former president to the Anti-Corruption Committee earlier in the morning.
Authorities also confirmed that a search was being conducted at the home of Kocharyan’s other son, Levon Kocharyan.
Marina Ohanyan, spokesperson for Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Committee, said large-scale investigative measures were being carried out at dozens of addresses as part of corruption investigations.
The committee said further information would be released if necessary.
Armenian media also reported that investigative measures were being conducted at the Orange Premium Fitness Club, owned by the Kocharyan family, as well as at a Toyota dealership.
Earlier in the day, opposition Armenia faction MP Mesrop Manukyan said employees of Armenia’s National Security Service had been at Levon Kocharyan’s home since the morning.
The developments came a day after Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made a series of critical remarks about the opposition during parliamentary discussions on the government programme, including comments referring to the “Kocharyan clan”.
