Türkiye has established four sub-commissions to oversee the implementation of a new legal framework tied to the disarmament of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The panels were drawn up on Monday at the first meeting of the Monitoring and Evaluation Board, chaired by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz at the presidential complex in Ankara.
The board is responsible for coordinating government agencies involved in implementing the new legislation.
The four bodies will focus on legal and judicial coordination, monitoring and assessment, social integration and disarmament, respectively.
Monday’s meeting was attended by the ministers of justice, foreign affairs, the interior and defence, along with top security and intelligence officials.
Türkiye’s Law on Strengthening National Solidarity and Social Cohesion was approved by parliament earlier this month and published in the Official Gazette last week.
It provides a legal framework for suspending certain investigations, prosecutions and prison sentences involving the PKK and affiliated groups.
Before the law’s provisions can take effect, security institutions must first verify that the PKK and affiliated groups have ended their militant activities and surrendered their weapons.
Türkiye’s National Security Council must then confirm this before publishing its findings in the Official Gazette.
The measures are part of Ankara’s “Terror-Free Türkiye” initiative, which seeks to end a decades-long conflict that has killed tens of thousands of civilians and military personnel.
In May last year, the PKK leadership based in northern Iraq announced that it would lay down its arms and disband after the group’s imprisoned leader, Abdullah Öcalan, called on the organisation to end its armed struggle.
Soon afterward, PKK militants in northern Iraq staged a symbolic ceremony in which weapons were burned, and the group subsequently announced its intention to withdraw all its fighters from Türkiye.
The PKK has long been designated a terrorist organisation by Türkiye, the U.S. and the European Union.
