Azerbaijan’s chairing of the inaugural Global South NGO Platform (GSNP) assembly in Baku highlights the country’s commitment to regional cooperation, the international civil society network’s Secretary-General has said.
Fuad Karimli told AnewZ’s Leyla Rahimli that participants in the international civil society network had demonstrated their trust in Azerbaijan by allowing the country to retain the Secretary-General role for another five years.
“His Excellency President Ilham Aliyev said that our participants can trust in Azerbaijan, and we see that trust renewed this year,” he said.
“They've entrusted us with five more years with a Secretary General role, and now we have a new mechanism in place showing our commitment to regional cooperation,” Karimli added.

The first GSNP assembly opened in Baku on Thursday (14 May) as part of Baku Urban Week, with more than 1,000 delegates from over 116 countries in attendance.
The civil society platform also adopted its final declaration, presented by Karimli on the same day.
The declaration stated that the establishment of the GSNP reflects a shared historical necessity and growing global solidarity.
It also highlighted Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement - a group of 121 developing countries not formally aligned with or against any major global power bloc - as well as Baku’s role in COP29, including hosting the 2024 edition of the conference.
Igor Garafulic, the UN’s Interim Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, said the GSNP and other initiatives led by Baku were helping to amplify the voice of the Global South.
“For Azerbaijan, this is a mission of bridge-building. By leveraging its leadership in The Non-Aligned Movement and its role as host of COP29, Baku is ensuring the voices of the Global South are finally heard on the world stage,” he said.
