The President’s Cup 2026 international regatta has officially got under way at the Sarsang Reservoir, marking a historic milestone as the first international sporting event hosted at the site.
The competition carries strong symbolic weight, reflecting Azerbaijan’s post-conflict reconstruction efforts and the growing integration of formerly affected territories into the country’s national and international sporting calendar.
According to the Azerbaijan State News Agency, the opening ceremony of the International President’s Cup 2026 regatta, dedicated to the 103rd anniversary of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, was held in the Aghdara district.
More than 100 athletes from 16 countries are taking part in the five-day regatta, competing across disciplines including academic rowing, kayaking, canoeing, dragon boat racing and sailing. Events opened in the Aghdara district, with the inaugural ceremony dedicated to the 103rd anniversary of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, underscoring the event’s political and historical significance.
Speaking at the opening, Youth and Sports Minister Farid Gayibov described holding the regatta at Sarsang as both “important and gratifying,” praising the organisation and highlighting the strategic importance of developing sports infrastructure in the liberated areas.
The regatta also serves as a showcase for Azerbaijan’s expanding water-sports facilities, with competition venues spanning Sugovushan and Mingachevir. Events will continue at the Kur Olympic Training and Sports Centre until the tournament concludes on 1 May.
Mingachevir, long regarded as the country’s water sports hub, is hosting the official opening ceremonies, including a team parade along Heydar Aliyev Avenue, followed by a large-scale cultural programme featuring music, dance and specially produced performances.
Organised jointly by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Azerbaijan Water Sports Federation, the President’s Cup has attracted participants from Azerbaijan, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Sweden, Tajikistan, Türkiye, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
The event will conclude with a fireworks display, closing a regatta that blends elite competition with broader state-building goals and positions Azerbaijan’s reclaimed regions firmly on the international sporting map.
A regatta is a competitive event in water sports, typically involving rowing, canoeing, kayaking or sailing races held on rivers, lakes or coastal waters. Beyond sport, regattas often carry wider significance, serving as showcases of national sporting development, international co-operation and, in some cases, cultural identity and historic renewal for the host region.
