Residents of the village of Kurseb in western Georgia have been evacuated to safety after a landslide struck the area. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene and authorities closed a key road as a precaution.

The Kutaisi (Motsameta)-Tkibuli-Ambrolauri road was closed to traffic following the incident and traffic with vehicles diverted along alternative routes. Officials from the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs were mobilised to assist local authorities, alongside the country’s Emergency Management Service, which deployed specialist equipment to help stabilise the affected area and assess the damage.

It is not yet known whether anyone has been injured.

Landslides are a recurring hazard in Georgia’s mountainous western regions, particularly in areas with steep terrain and heavy rainfall. In August 2023, a major landslide struck the mountain resort of Shovi in the Racha region, killing more than 30 people and destroying homes and infrastructure.

Authorities said monitoring of the slope and surrounding area will continue while emergency teams work to secure the site.
