Environmental protection, promotion of trade as well as the upcoming summit meeting of the Caspian Sea littoral states next year were also discussed during the meeting.
According to a Foreign Ministry statement, the meeting on Tuesday convened with the objective to strengthen bilateral and multilateral interactions within the framework of cooperation between the Caspian littoral states.
It was attended by Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs and the Special Representative on Caspian Sea, and Nikolai Odovichenko, Russia's Special Representative to the Working Group on the Caspian Sea.
The conference discussed a wide range of topics from economy, investment and regional development; to environment, fisheries and restoration of the Caspian Sea ecosystem; as well as transit, logistics and development of the North-South Corridor.
They exchanged views on environmental issues, including the decline in the Caspian Sea water level and strategies for developing economic and trade cooperation among the Sea’s neighboring countries.
Iran shares a 650-kilometer coastline to south of the Caspian Sea through its three northern provinces of Gilan, Mazandaran and Golestan.
The Iranian and Russian envoys also reviewed the latest developments related to the Caspian Sea including the necessary arrangements for holding the Seventh Summit of the Caspian littoral states in Tehran in August 2025.
Tehran was nominated to host the Caspian Summit on August 12th, 2026 to commemorate the International Caspian Sea Day where the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Caspian Sea and the Environment from Pollution was signed in Tehran and came into force.
The event is observed by Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan which make up the five littoral states.
In November, Iran hosted for two days the first ever Forum of Caspian Sea Governor Generals in Rasht, capital of the northern province of Gilan.
A peace agreement between Washington and Tehran is yet to materialise, with U.S. President Donald Trump saying that negotiations are incomplete and an Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman saying that a deal isn't imminent.
