Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev meets leaders at UN

On September 23 and 24, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev conducted a series of high-level meetings at the United Nations headquarters in New York, engaging with prominent international leaders to strengthen bilateral and multilateral ties.

President Aliyev met with William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya. The two leaders hailed the development of relations between Azerbaijan and Kenya, noting that the opening of Azerbaijan’s embassy in Kenya has provided momentum for bilateral ties. They emphasized the importance of mutual visits at various levels and discussed organizing visits by delegations of government officials to further enhance cooperation. Opportunities for collaboration in energy, agriculture, industry, and other sectors were highlighted, alongside discussions on coordination within international organizations.

Ilham Aliyev also held talks with Alexander Stubb, President of the Republic of Finland. President Stubb congratulated Aliyev on the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and on the historic achievements reached in Washington, noting Finland’s longstanding support for peace in the region. Aliyev expressed gratitude and recalled that during Finland’s Chairpersonship of the OSCE, the decision was made to dissolve the OSCE Minsk Group. The conversation underlined the importance of joint efforts to advance the peace agenda and included discussions on bilateral cooperation, collaboration within international organizations, and Azerbaijan–European Union relations.

In addition, leader of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, to explore ways to strengthen cooperation between Azerbaijan and European institutions. He also held talks with Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece, focusing on bilateral relations and regional developments. Furthermore, Aliyev met with Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, President of Iraq, to discuss enhanced diplomatic and economic collaboration.

On September 24, leader of Azerbaijan met with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Portuguese Republic, in New York. President Rebelo de Sousa congratulated Aliyev on achievements in normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia and advancing the peace agenda, as witnessed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Aliyev expressed his gratitude and highlighted the historic significance of the Washington Summit, noting that Azerbaijan is the initiator of the regional peace agenda and will continue efforts to strengthen peace. The leaders also emphasized developing relations between Azerbaijan and Portugal across multiple fields, continuing political consultations, organizing mutual visits, and enhancing cooperation within international organizations.

Also on September 24, Azerbaijani leader met with Rossen Jeliazkov, Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria, in New York. Prime Minister Jeliazkov stated that political relations between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria are at an excellent level. In turn, Aliyev noted that bilateral relations are marked by traditional friendship and partnership. The two leaders hailed ongoing successful cooperation in the energy sector and discussed new prospects for developing relations across various fields.

These meetings collectively highlight Azerbaijan’s active agenda at the UN and its ongoing efforts to engage with global leaders on key political, economic, and regional issues, while promoting peace, stability, and cooperation.
