President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, together with First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, attended the opening of the 3rd CIS Games in Ganja on 28 September and officially declared the competition open.
On 28 September, the solemn opening ceremony of the 3rd Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Games was held in Ganja. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva watched the event from the stands.
The ceremony began with the raising of the tricolour flag of Azerbaijan, accompanied by the national anthem. Athletes from the participating countries then took part in a ceremonial parade. Carrying the Azerbaijani flag into the arena were karate fighter Asiman Gurbanli and taekwondo athlete Zemfira Hasanzade.
Samir Sharifov, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 3rd CIS Games, and Nurlan Seitimov, Deputy Secretary General of the CIS, addressed the audience with speeches that underlined the significance of the Games. Following this, athletes and their coaches participated in a traditional swearing-in ceremony.
President Ilham Aliyev officially declared the 3rd CIS Games open, marking the start of the competition. The opening continued with an artistic performance, adding a cultural dimension to the celebration.
