Hamas announced on Friday that it would release an American-Israeli dual national, the last known American hostage in Gaza, following a proposal to resume negotiations on the second phase of a ceasefire deal.
Hamas also confirmed the release of the bodies of four other hostages.
Discussions focused on securing the release of Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old from New Jersey who served in the Israeli military. The U.S., Qatar, and Egypt are working to restart talks for the release of remaining hostages and allow aid into Gaza.
Fighting in Gaza has halted since January 19 under the first phase of the ceasefire. The second phase involves talks on the withdrawal of Israeli troops, but Israel insists hostages be released first.
