Syrian state television reported that the device had been planted inside the café, which is located near the Palace of Justice in the heart of the capital. Authorities have not released further details, and no group has yet claimed responsibility.

The state news agency SANA, citing the head of Syria's emergency health services, confirmed the casualty figures.

Rare attack since Assad's overthrow

Damascus has experienced relatively few attacks since the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. His removal by Ahmed al-Sharaa and rebel forces brought an end to 14 years of civil war.

Earlier car bomb

In a separate incident on 19 May, a car bomb outside a defence ministry building in Damascus killed one soldier and injured at least 18 other people.
