An armed unmanned aerial vehicle crashed on a Black Sea beach in northern Türkiye on Sunday, prompting a security operation and the controlled detonation of its munitions.
The incident occurred in the Kurucaşile district of Türkiye’s Bartın province, where security forces evacuated the area and established a cordon after the drone was discovered on the shoreline.
According to local authorities, specialist bomb disposal teams were immediately dispatched to the scene and carried out a controlled detonation of the drone’s onboard munitions.
No injuries were reported.
Turkish officials have not publicly identified the drone’s origin or linked it to any country or military force.
However, local media reports have suggested the aircraft may have been part of an unmanned system associated with the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
The incident took place near the border between Türkiye’s Bartın and Kastamonu provinces, an area overlooking one of the southern Black Sea’s busiest maritime regions.
In a statement, local authorities said security measures were implemented immediately after the drone was found, adding that explosive ordnance specialists had safely neutralised the threat.
The discovery is the latest in a series of incidents involving military hardware reaching Turkish territory since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Over the past three years, Turkish authorities have occasionally recovered armed sea and aerial drones, as well as naval mines, that drifted into Turkish territorial waters after being used in military operations elsewhere in the Black Sea.
During the early stages of the war, several naval mines were discovered along Türkiye’s northern coastline, prompting coordinated monitoring efforts by Turkish naval and coastguard units.
A key NATO member that maintains relations with both Moscow and Kyiv, Türkiye has sought to balance support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity with continued diplomatic engagement with Russia.
The latest incident highlights the spillover risks posed by the conflict, raising concerns among Black Sea states that military hardware used in the war can create unexpected hazards beyond the immediate combat zone.
