Kazakhstan plans to build an international Earth observation satellite network of up to 14 spacecraft, expanding a project already bringing together Mongolia, the Republic of the Congo and Nigeria.
The initial constellation is expected to consist of nine satellites by 2030, with six from Kazakhstan and one each from the three partner countries.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Zhaslan Madiyev said Kazakhstan is open to other countries joining the project, potentially increasing the total number of satellites to 14.
The constellation will be used for Earth observation, with satellite data helping countries monitor natural resources, including water, and track changes across large territories. Cooperation between several countries would give the network broader geographical coverage and access to more data than separate national systems.
Madiyev announced the plans at Space Days Kazakhstan 2026 in Astana, where around 900 participants from more than 50 countries are discussing satellite technologies, Earth observation, artificial intelligence and international space projects.
The talks come as the global space economy, currently valued at more than $600 billion, is projected to surpass $1 trillion in the coming years. Satellite communications and navigation, Earth observation and commercial technologies are among the key areas driving growth.
Kazakhstan is also involved in OTS-SAT, the first joint satellite project involving members of the Organization of Turkic States.
The spacecraft is being developed by Kazakh engineers and specialists at the spacecraft assembly and testing complex in Astana, where its engineering model has already been fully assembled. The satellite is scheduled for launch in 2027.
The forum runs for two days in Astana before participants travel to the Baikonur Cosmodrome on 9 September.
They are expected to watch the launch of a Soyuz-2.1a rocket as part of the final stage of the programme.
