Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner will travel to Islamabad on Saturday for Pakistan-mediated talks with Iran, the White House said.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Friday that Washington had observed “some progress” from Iran in recent days, without providing further detail.

Cautious optimism from Washington

“Steve and Jared will be heading to Pakistan tomorrow to hear the Iranians out. We hope progress will be made and we hope that positive developments will come from this meeting,” she said.

Reuters had earlier reported that Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi, was expected in Islamabad on Friday to discuss proposals aimed at reviving peace negotiations with the U.S.

Vice president on standby

Leavitt added that JD Vance, who led an earlier round of unsuccessful talks in Islamabad this month, remains prepared to travel if discussions show signs of progress.

“The president, the vice president, the secretary of state, will be waiting here in the United States for updates and the vice president, I understand, is on standby and will be willing to dispatch to Pakistan if we feel it's a necessary use of his time,” Leavitt said.

Trump this week extended a two-week ceasefire with Iran at the last moment, providing additional time for diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the conflict.
