Israeli strikes hit the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Sunday in retaliation for Houthi missiles fired towards Israel. Houthi media said at least two people were killed and five injured.

The Israeli military said its targets included a military compound housing the presidential palace, two power plants and a fuel storage site. The Houthi-controlled Saba news agency reported the casualties.

According to the Israeli army, the strikes followed repeated Houthi missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory in recent days. On Friday, the Houthis said they had launched a ballistic missile towards Israel, which an Israeli Air Force official described as carrying sub-munitions designed to detonate on impact. It was the first known use of this missile from Yemen, the official added.

The Houthis have escalated attacks since Israel’s war in Gaza began in October 2023. They have struck vessels in the Red Sea and fired missiles towards Israel, most of which were intercepted. Israel has repeatedly responded with airstrikes on Houthi-held territory, including Hodeidah port.

On Sunday, senior Houthi figure Abdul Qader al-Murtada said the group would continue its campaign, describing it as solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. “We will not abandon our brothers in Gaza, whatever the sacrifices,” he wrote on X.
