Kyrgyzstan has begun building its first-ever wind power plant, marking a major step toward clean energy and regional electricity trade.

Construction has officially begun on Kyrgyzstan’s first wind power plant near the city of Balykchy, located in the Karakol free economic zone, according to the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry.

The project is being carried out by Metrum Tech, with the first 1 MW turbine expected to start operating by August 2025. The full wind farm, planned to reach 100 MW capacity, will be developed in two phases. Once completed, the facility is expected to generate up to 250 million kWh of electricity annually, helping to supply the Issyk-Kul region and reduce the country’s dependence on conventional energy sources.

The project also aligns with Kyrgyzstan’s participation in the CASA-1000 electricity transmission initiative, which aims to export green electricity from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan during summer months. Valued at over $1.2 billion, CASA-1000 is funded by a range of international partners, including the World Bank and the European Investment Bank.

In addition to supporting energy sustainability, the wind farm is expected to create up to 50 local jobs and attract infrastructure investment to the region.
