Tourists may soon be able to view Kazakhstan’s tourist sites by drone. Officials are planning to trial flights of between five and 30 minutes over landmarks in the country, its Ministry of Transport said.
Kazakhstan’s first ever flight of an unmanned aircraft with a passenger on board took place in the nation’s capital Astana on Thursday, as part of the 2026 Future Games which are taking place in the city.
The EH216-S drone is designed to carry two passengers, reaches speeds of up to 130 kilometres per hour, and is capable of flights of up to 35 kilometres in distance.
After trialing flights on tourist routes over historical, cultural, and natural sites, Kazakhstan hopes in the future the drones could form part of the country’s transport infrastructure, deliver medications and help with firefighting, among other tasks.
Kazakhstan’s government is in the process of creating the legal framework for the functioning of unmanned aerial aircraft. Legislation focusing on the regulation of drones and unmanned air traffic control systems has already been adopted.
