Kazakhstan has released an Amur tiger into the wild for the first time in more than 70 years, marking the beginning of a long-term effort to restore the species to its historic range in Central Asia.
The female tiger, named Umit, the Kazakh word for “hope”, was released into the Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve, the Ministry of Ecology said.
The reserve was selected because the southern Balkhash region and the Ili River delta once formed part of the natural range of the Caspian tiger, one of Central Asia’s largest predators.
Extensive tugai forests and abundant prey once provided ideal conditions for the species. However, by the mid-20th century, habitat loss, declining populations of wild ungulates and poaching had driven the tiger to extinction in Kazakhstan. The last confirmed records date back more than seven decades.
Preparations for the reintroduction programme have been under way for more than a decade. During that time, Kazakhstan established the Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve, increased populations of wild ungulates, built specialised adaptation enclosures for large carnivores, developed the necessary infrastructure and introduced continuous scientific monitoring.
Before entering the wild, Umit underwent veterinary and behavioural assessments. Specialists evaluated her health, hunting ability, behaviour and response to human presence before concluding that she was capable of surviving independently.
The tiger has been fitted with a GPS/GSM satellite collar, allowing conservationists to monitor her movements and adaptation around the clock. Camera traps and other monitoring systems will also be used to track her progress within the reserve.
Umit is one of four wild-caught Amur tigers brought to Kazakhstan in May 2026, including two adults and two cubs. Following their arrival, the animals were placed in specially built adaptation enclosures within the Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve.
The adult male remains under observation while undergoing behavioural assessments. A decision on his release will be made once specialists confirm that he is ready to survive independently in the wild.
The two cubs, which arrived in Kazakhstan at the age of six to seven months, continue to grow in the reserve. Once they reach 18 months of age and complete the required veterinary and behavioural assessments, specialists will determine whether they are ready for release.
According to the Ministry of Ecology, the programme is based on molecular genetic research showing that the Caspian tiger and the Amur tiger are genetically almost identical. As a result, the Amur tiger has been identified as the most suitable population for restoring the species to its historic range in Central Asia.
