Tajikistan has been rocked by back-to-back strong earthquakes, damaging dozens of homes and raising concerns about further seismic activity in the region
On April 14, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the central region of Tajikistan. According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake occurred at 05:44 local time at a depth of 16 kilometers.
The epicenter was located 156 kilometers northeast of the capital, Dushanbe, and 18 kilometers east of the Rasht district. Tremors were felt at a magnitude of 3–4 in the epicenter area and around 3 in Rasht. Initial reports indicate no casualties or serious damage as a result of the earthquake.
However, just a day earlier — on April 13 — a stronger 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit the country. The epicenter of that quake was located 170 kilometers south of Khujand at a depth of 15 kilometers.
Preliminary assessments report that at least 94 residential houses were damaged. Authorities are currently assessing the situation, and investigations into the extent of the damage are ongoing.
