The United States has granted Hungary a one-year exemption from sanctions on Russian oil and gas, a White House official confirmed Friday, November 7.

Last month, Trump imposed Ukraine-related sanctions on Russian oil companies Lukoil and Rosneft, warning that countries buying oil from these firms could face penalties. Orban, a long-time Trump ally, made the case that Hungary, a European country, needed continued access to Russian energy.

Trump, seeking leverage on Moscow to end the war in Ukraine, expressed sympathy for Orban’s position.

Hungary has relied on Russian energy since the start of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, drawing criticism from several European Union and NATO allies.
