Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has arrived in Turkmenistan for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit.
He was received by a guard of honour at the International Airport in the western port city of Turkmenbashi.
Turkmenistan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rashid Meredov, welcomed Aliyev, alongside other officials.
The 8th Consultative Meeting of the Heads of State of Central Asia and Azerbaijan has now begun in the city of Turkmenbashi. Aliyev is attending the event.
Speaking at the meeting, Aliyev noted the important stage of integration for Azerbaijan, after the country acquired full member status.
He said that trade with regional countries had increased by more than 50 per cent, Turkmenistan's state news platform reported.
Participating countries put an emphasis on the development of the transport and logistics potential of the Trans-Caspian Middle Corridor and the 'Digital Silk Road' project, Turkmenistan's state news platform reported.
The Middle Corridor facilitates the transport of goods from China to Türkiye, via Central Asia, the Caspian Sea and the Caucasus.
The Belt and Road Initiative is the digital wing of China's massive global infrastructure initiative, using state loans and companies to help build projects connecting China to the rest of the world.
Participating countries also emphasised the importance of the expansion of energy supplies, the Turkmenistan News Portal said.
Leaders from CIS member states will attend the Heads of State meeting on Friday in the Turkmen resort town of Avaza, alongside Aliyev.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to make his CIS debut, having been invited to an expanded session of the meeting.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is also due to arrive on Thursday.
Putin is due to hold a one-to-one meeting with Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedow before the meeting on Friday.
