A new strain of mpox, known as clade Ib, has been detected in China, linked to a foreigner who travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Four additional cases have been reported, with all individuals experiencing mild symptoms.
Mpox spreads through close contact, causing rashes and flu-like symptoms, and can occasionally be fatal. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a global health emergency in 2022 following outbreaks in Africa.
China monitors travellers entering the country and has classified mpox as a Category B infectious disease, enabling authorities to impose quarantines and restrict gatherings during outbreaks.
