Landslide death toll rises in China's Gansu Province

Flash floods in Gansu Province in China's northwest last week killed 25 people and injured 23 more, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday, raising earlier death tolls.

Initial reports said 10 people had died after torrential rain hit Weiyuan County in Gansu's Dingxi City on 26 July.

China's national commission for disaster prevention, reduction and relief has requested investigations and assessments from Gansu provincial authorities, state news agency Xinhua reported.

Authorities in Gansu warned of further landslides, including in Dingxi, as heavy rainfall continues during the annual flood season.

More regions under weather alerts

Beijing and Inner Mongolia issued weather alerts on Sunday as China's weather observatory warned of heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms across areas stretching from the southwest to the northeast.

Heavy rainfall is also continuing across large parts of Sichuan province, where state broadcaster CCTV reported that 64,609 people have been evacuated to safety. More than 881,000 residents have been relocated since the start of the flood season.

Typhoon threat approaches coast

China's weather observatory also warned that Super Typhoon Dolphin, currently moving towards East Asia from the western Pacific, is expected to begin affecting southeastern coastal regions from Wednesday.
