Record-breaking heat wave in Greece overwhelms power grid

As Greece swelters under an intense heat wave, electricity demand and wholesale prices have soared to record highs, straining the national grid and pushing infrastructure to its limits.

A powerful heat wave in Greece has driven electricity consumption and wholesale power prices to their highest levels of the summer, according to local media reports on Friday.

Data from the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO), cited by To Vima, showed that demand peaked at 10,798 megawatts on 24 July and continued rising on 25 July due to widespread use of air conditioning.

The extreme heat is testing the durability of Greece’s energy system, causing wholesale electricity prices to exceed €142 ($166.5) per megawatt-hour—marking the highest rate so far this summer.
