The former members of *One Direction* joined family and friends to bid farewell to Liam Payne, who died aged 31 after a tragic fall in Buenos Aires. The private funeral in Buckinghamshire drew tributes from fans, friends, and music industry figures.
The former members of the boy band One Direction gathered on Wednesday to mourn their bandmate Liam Payne at his funeral, held just over a month after the singer passed away at the age of 31.
Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson joined Payne’s family and friends at a private church service in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, northwest of London. Payne’s former partner, Cheryl—mother of his seven-year-old son—was photographed leaving the service.
The singer-songwriter was discovered dead after falling from his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, sparking a global outpouring of grief from fans. His coffin was brought to the church in a white carriage pulled by two white horses, adorned with floral tributes spelling "Son" and "Daddy."
Among those attending were Payne’s girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, actor and TV presenter James Corden, and Simon Cowell, the music mogul behind One Direction, formed on Britain’s X Factor. Catapulted to international fame in the 2010s, the group became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, charming fans with their youthful looks and hit songs like What Makes You Beautiful, Live While We’re Young, Best Song Ever, and Story of My Life.
Payne, a teenager when One Direction found global fame, later opened up about the pressures of stardom and his struggles with alcohol.
In 2021, he reflected on the experience, saying: "Don’t get me wrong, we had the best time ever, but there were moments where ... you don’t realise you have a choice at that point. There is a sacrifice for that."
After the band’s split in 2016, Payne embarked on a solo career, releasing his debut album in 2019.
Argentine authorities have charged three individuals in connection with Payne’s death, following an autopsy that revealed traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his system.
