Electric vehicle sales hit record high in Germany despite overall market decline

Electric car sales in Germany surged to a new record in the first half of 2025, making up 17.7% of all new vehicle registrations, according to the German road traffic agency KBA. Despite a 4.7% drop in overall car sales, demand for EVs grew by 35% year-on-year.

Germany registered 248,726 electric vehicles between January and June 2025, a sharp increase from 184,125 units in the same period last year.

The rise is attributed to stricter EU emission targets and the arrival of more affordable EV models, boosting interest across Europe’s second-largest EV market.

While total new car registrations fell to 1.4 million units, the electric segment continued to grow, reinforcing a broader shift toward cleaner transportation.

Analysts expect the trend to persist as regulatory pressure mounts and carmakers accelerate EV rollouts to meet EU climate goals.
