A multimodal cargo airport in Azerbaijan’s Alat Free Economic Zone (FEZ) is scheduled for commissioning in Q1 2027, the deputy head of the FEZ governing body Ismail Manafov announced.

"We have reached an agreement with investors to establish a multimodal cargo airport. Implementation of this project has already begun, with completion expected in Q1 2027," Manafov said on Wednesday at the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) business forum in Shusha, Azerbaijan as local media outlets reported.

He added that the airport's capacity will be 500,000 tons of cargo per year, with plans to increase it to two million tons annually in the future.

Azerbaijan's Silk Way Group is constructing the airport in the Alat FEZ, which is 70 km from Baku. The cargo airport will operate under the company Silk Way Alat Free Economic Zone, an entity established to promote Silk Way Group's logistics and infrastructure initiatives.

The zone’s facilities will have access to the Baku International Sea Trade Port and extensive railway and motorway networks, so the newly built airport will definately enhance Azerbaijan's transportation and distribution capabilities.

The project includes the construction of individual forwarder warehouses, state-of-the-art perishables airside facilities, and modern office buildings. This comprehensive plan aligns with the dynamic needs of the logistics industry, ensuring adaptability and innovation in operations, Silk Way Group stated.

"Designed as an advanced logistics hub, the airport will include 18 aircraft stands, a 4,000-metre runway and taxiway as well as an air traffic control centre, fuel and fire services, and other related amenities. The project is not only envisioned to enhance the transportation capabilities of the country but also to stimulate the comprehensive economic development of the surrounding region," Silk Way Group said in the statement.

In line with a commitment to environmental responsibility, the construction of the new facility will incorporate advanced sustainable technologies, including the use of alternative energy sources, positioning the cargo airport as a model of eco-friendly infrastructure.

Specifically, sustainable and energy-saving solutions will be applied, such as CEDD AGL, TKH’s advanced airfield ground lighting technology, which will be used in the runway construction.

Last November, Silk Way Alat Free Economic Zone Company (SW AFEZCO) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) signed a strategic agreement, aiming to develop environmentally sustainable airport operations that will comply with both national regulations and international environmental standards. In particular, it focuses on technical guidance from ICAO for achievement of Green Airport certification, the integration of industry-leading environmental practices, and innovations to establish the Alat Free Economic Zone as a benchmark for sustainable airport operations.
